Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kendo for me?
Kendo is open to all individuals regardless of age, size, gender, or prior martial arts experience
What are the benefits of Kendo?
What do I wear?
Kendo offers a range of benefits, including improved physical fitness, discipline, mental focus, stress relief, increased self-confidence, social interaction, and a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture. It fosters holistic personal development by combining rigorous physical training with the cultivation of valuable life skills such as respect, humility, and perseverance.
For those first starting off, we ask that you wear comfortable athletic clothes and be ready to move with your bare feet. Over time, you would wear a uniform called a "kendogi" and "hakama," which are loose-fitting garments designed for mobility. Once experienced, you would also wear protective gear called "bogu," consisting of a helmet (men), chest protector (do), gloves (kote), and groin protection (tare), to ensure safety during practice and matches.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
While it is not a requirement to speak Japanese to practice kendo, having a basic understanding of the language can be helpful as many of the traditional terms and commands used in kendo are in Japanese.
Can I observe classes before joining?
Of course! We also welcome active participation from your first practice. Those with experience are welcome to jump into drill rotations.
What should I expect during my first few classes? Will there be sparring involved?
In the beginning, you'll focus on familiarizing yourself with the fundamentals of Kendo, such as techniques, etiquette, footwork, posture and terminology. Rather than engaging in combat, you'll work closely with the sensei or senpai, who will guide you through basic strikes and movements, ensuring that you feel at ease and confident.
